American Imperialism after Spanish-American War

Essential Questions:
a. How did the U.S. change Cuba’s Constitution? 
 -The U.S. changed Cuba's Constitution by adopting (adding) the Platt Amendment to their constitution:
  • Cuba could not make treaties that might limit its independence or permit a foreign power to control any part of its territory.
  • The United States reserved the right to intervene in Cuba.
  • Cuba was not to go into debt.
  • The United States could buy or lease land on the island for naval stations and refueling stations.
b. What did the Roosevelt Corollary build on? 
 -The Roosevelt Corollary built on the Monroe Doctrine.
c. Pancho Villa was pursued by whom? 
 -Pancho Vila was pursed (chased) by John J. Pershing.
d. How did the U.S. get the land for the Panama Canal? 
 -The U.S. got land from Panama for the Panama Canal by helping Panama declare their independence from Colombia. 
e. What is meant by “speak softly and carry a big stick"?
-"Speak softly and carry a big stick" meant negotiations were always backed by the treat of military force.
